Strokes in typefaces
Each part of a letter has a special name. Some parts have more than one name, depending on which book
you read, and which century the book discusses.
Arm: A bar that extends out from the letter.
Bar: A horizontal line such as the central line of the letter H.
Cross stroke: The horizontal stroke of t or f.
Hairline: The thinnest stroke of a letter.
Stem: The main vertical stroke (or one of the main vertical strokes) making up a letter.
Tail: A downward-sloping part of a letter such as the lower piece of a capital Q or the end piece of
a lowercase g.
